By the time you pay for the rental and all the cleaning chemicals you will have spent an amount that can pay for a big chunk of a professional cleaning job. If you factor in the cost of your time it is even more expensive to do it yourself.
The last reason to hire a professional is to get professional quality results. You can not compare the results you get from that cheap plastic rental to those achieved by professional machines costing thousands of dollars. A professional will be able to clean your carpet better and deeper. They will also be able to extract more water meaning that the carpe will dry much, much quicker.
